Why choose Vegan Omega-3?
Vegan Omega-3 delivers all the benefits of EPA and DHA, the essential fatty acids which help to support your heart, brain and vision, but from sustainable plant-based sources. Offering naturally high levels of EPA and DHA in natural triglyceride form from algae, this product also contains vitamin D3 from an algae source to support immune function and bone health, and is entirely suitable for vegans.
Why are omega-3 oils important for health?
No longer deemed the bad guys, we now know that dietary fats are absolutely crucial for health. One particular type of fats, omega-3s, have become the subject of extensive and ongoing research over recent years. Omega-3s are the fats you find in large quantities in oily fish such as salmon, mackerel and anchovies, and they are known to be helpful for virtually all aspects of health including heart, brain, mood, joints, vision and inflammation. For those who choose not to consume fish, it can be difficult to get enough of these essential fats through diet alone, and it may be helpful to keep your body's levels of the omega-3s EPA and DHA topped up through an algae source of these important fats in order to maintain optimal overall health.
Why algae sourced omega-3?
It's widely known that fish are a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids but what is less known is that this is actually due to the microalgae found in their food chain. Fish eat marine algae and phytoplankton, building up their own levels of EPA and DHA. Our new product Vegan Omega-3 sources EPA and DHA directly from algae, grown under a controlled, proprietary process that is environmentally responsible, with no risk of contaminants.
How does omega-3 from algae compare to omega-3 from flaxseed oil?
Flaxseed oil is rich in a type of Omega-3 fatty acid called alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA. Other plant-based sources of omega-3 such as hemp oil, chia seeds and walnuts also contain ALA. ALA is not biologically active, which means it needs to be converted into other types of omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, in the body so that it can provide the same health benefits. Our bodies have a limited capability to convert ALA, with issues such as stress or illness reducing this ability even further. This conversion also depends on nutrients such as vitamin B6 and zinc, which are often lacking in those following a vegan diet. Another factor to consider is that omega-3 and omega-6 (which ideally should be in a ratio of no more than 1:4 in our diet) compete with each other during this conversion process. Vegan diets are likely to be higher in omega-6, and the higher this intake; the lower the conversion of ALA to EPA and DHA will be. One of the reasons that algae stands out as a vegan source of omega-3 is that it is already rich in EPA and DHA, with studies to show it is comparable to fish oil in its nutritional availability of these fatty acids and therefore making it a more potent and effective source than other plant-based omega-3s.
What are EPA and DHA important for?
There are now more than 31,000 published papers supporting the health benefits of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA:
DHA contributes to normal brain function at a daily dose of 250mg per day.
DHA contributes to normal vision at a daily dose of 250mg per day.
EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart at a daily dose of 250mg per day.
EPA and DHA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood pressure at a daily dose of 3g EPA and DHA per day.
EPA and DHA contribute to the maintenance of normal blood triglyceride levels at a daily dose of 2g per day.
What is Vegan Omega-3 encapsulated with?
Vegan Omega-3 is encapsulated in softgel capsules made from glycerol, corn starch and carrageenan. Carrageenan is derived from red seaweed which is sustainably harvested from the ocean, and is very well-researched and safe for use in foods. Sometimes it is confused with poligeenan, which is not approved for use as a food additive. Carrageenan is not poligeenan, not carcinogenic and does not cause digestive tract inflammation, as confirmed by very well-conducted research.
