» Biotics - Live Bacteria
There are many names for the living bacteria that naturally populate the human digestive system. They are most commonly known as gut micro-flora, micro-biotics or friendly bacteria.
Not all bacteria are friendly, harmful bacteria species are known as pathogenic bacteria. Friendly bacteria are known as commensal bacteria. Your gut needs to exist in a state of equilibrium or balance; good and bad bacteria in harmony. The different strains of bacteria are classified by which ‘family’ of bacteria they belong to. Lactobacillus acidophilus belongs to the Bacillus family, Bifidobacterium bifidum belongs to the Bacterium family.
There are over 300 known types of friendly bacteria that naturally live on our gut.
Our complex digestive ecosystem should keep a natural balance of these microbial species; a severe imbalance can result in a condition known as Dysbiosis. The main factors that can compromise the natural micro-flora balance are poor diet, stress, excessive alcohol, infections and anti-biotics.
Antibiotics are the worst for upsetting this balance. We all know how effective antibiotics are at killing bad bacteria in the body. Unfortunately antibiotics can’t differentiate between different bacteria strains, meaning it will kill entire families of bacteria indiscriminately. So after finishing a course of antibiotics, supplementing your diet with live bacteria may be a good idea.
Live bacteria supplements can vary in a number of ways. The main difference is the species or type of bacteria contained. Some live bacteria supplements only contain one species of bacteria, where as others contain over 10. If you are supplementing you should consider changing the product you use from time to time to ensure that you consume a wide variety of micro-organisms.
You should also take note of how many bacteria are contained in each serving. The amount of bacteria contained in a live bacteria supplement is measured in ‘colony-forming units per gram’ or CFU/g for short. Some supplements show this is CFU per capsule/serving.
Prebiotics feed the micro-flora in your gut. Prebiotics are non-digestible foods which pass through our digestive system without being destroyed to feed and stimulate growth of our micro-flora. Prebiotics can be found in foods and good nutrition is important to support our friendly bacteria however, in some cases, supplementation may be required
We supply a wide range of biotic and prebiotic products.
