Why Choose Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate?
Vitamin B6 is essential for over 160 vital enzyme processes in our body, including energy production, the regulation of hormonal activity, methylation and proper nervous system function. Before it can be used for this purpose it must first be converted into its coenzyme form pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P) by the liver. Supplementing with P-5-P eliminates this step by providing B6 in its converted form, allowing for greater bioavailability. Nutri Advanced Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate provides 25mg of P-5-P per tablet.
Why supplement with P-5-P?
Vitamin B6 is involved in more physiological processes in the body than perhaps any other B vitamin. In a typical diet, it can be found in poultry, fish, fortified grains and cereals, bananas, chickpeas and avocados. However, many plant sources contain a less bioavailable form of B6 - pyridoxine glucoside. This form may be more difficult to absorb and utilize than the forms found in meat, fish, poultry or certain supplements. Also, because it is a water soluble vitamin, our bodies do not retain it, and therefore we need to make sure we obtain enough each day. For that reason, many people, especially those who eat a mostly vegan or vegetarian diet, may choose to supplement with pyridoxal-5-phosphate (P-5-P). P-5-P may also be important for individuals for whom the conversion of vitamin B6 from its inactive to its active form does not work efficiently. Women wishing to support hormonal issues associated with their menstrual cycle may benefit from taking P-5-P.
How does P-5-P differ from Vitamin B6?
Vitamin B6 is a water-soluble vitamin that occurs in our food in different forms: as pyridoxal, pyridoxine and pyridoxamine. However, before they can fulfill their tasks in the body they must first be converted in the liver into the active form - pyridoxal-5-phosphate, or P-5-P. Most vitamin B6 supplements are in the form of pyridoxine and therefore require this additional conversion step to become active in the body.
Is supplementing with P-5-P safe?
The use of supplemental P-5-P has not been associated with toxicity, unlike the use of supplemental B6 as pyridoxine, which has been associated with peripheral neuropathy at higher doses.
