Why is an acidic environment important in the stomach?
The stomach produces hydrochloric acid naturally, to keep the cotents acidic. This acidic environment is needed to activate the enzymes needed for effective digestion, but also for ensuring that harmful pathogens such as microbes, yeasts and viruses that enter the body are destroyed. An acidic environment also allows vitamin B12 to be liberated from food, and for proper absorption of minerals from food. Low stomach acid can lead to the malabsorption of nutrients, including protein, other vitamins and minerals, especially vitamin B12 and iron.
