FolaPro provides folate as 5-methyl tetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) which is a highly absorbable form of folate. It is the biologically active, 'body-ready' form of folate which means it does not need to be converted and is ready for use by the body. Many supplements contain folic acid which then has to undergo a number of steps within the body in order to be converted to the useable form - 5-MTHF. The final step in this conversion is carried out in the body by an enzyme called MTHFR but many people have a genetic mutation which means this enzyme has reduced efficiency in converting folic acid to 5-MTHF. The form of folate in FolaPro® does not require this conversion so is the ideal choice for people whose folate status may be affected by genetic variation.
What does folate do?
Folate functions as a coenzyme, meaning it helps other enzymes in the body carry out important jobs. One important job is contributing to normal homocysteine metabolism. Homocysteine is a naturally occurring intermediate compound in the breakdown of the essential amino acid methionine. If levels of homocysteine are allowed to build up, however, this can have negative implications for cardiovascular health and cognitive function.
Adequate folate is crucial for the developing baby during pregnancy, as it contributes to maternal tissue growth during pregnancy.
Folate is also need for normal blood formation, the function of the immune system and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Dosage:
Take one tablet daily, or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner.
Can tablet be split into a smaller size? Yes. A pill cutter may be required.

For most individuals folate is completely non-toxic. Patients using methotrexate as cancer or rheumatoid arthritis therapy should only use additional folate on the advice of a medical doctor.
