Lactoferrin - What is it?

Lactoferrin is a single-chain glycoprotein, a bioactive peptide which has many important functions in the human body.

Lactoferrin is present in many bodily fluids such as tears, saliva and breast milk. It is found in strongest concentrations in human colostrum (first milk) and is particularly important as it may be the only source of iron for new born infants. It is believed to be responsible for passing immunity from mother to baby. Lactoferrin is also present in bovine milk however human milk contains up to fifteen times more Lactoferrin and is the second most abundant protein found in human milk.

Although Lactoferrin is abundant in milk protein it is mainly excreted by surface epithelia in the nasal, tracheal, and gastrointestinal tract.
