:: Trehalose - Natural Sweetener
» What is Trehalose?
Trehalose was first discovered in 1832 when H.A.L. Wiggers found it in an ergot of rye. It wasn’t until 1859 that French chemist Marcellin Berthelot isolated it from “trehala manna” a substance made by weevils, and named it Trehalose. It can be extracted from animals, plants, bacteria or fungi but nowadays it is mass-produced from starch for use in a wide range of products, from a treatment for Alzheimers to natural sweeteners.
As a 100% Natural Sweetener, it has huge potential benefits to health. It induces a lower blood glucose rise and does not cause tooth decay. It is also free from chemicals.
After ingestion, Trehalose is broken down into glucose but with an even blood glucose response. This makes appealing to people with active lifestyles looking for a natural, healthier source of energy.
Trehalose looks and tastes like sugar and is of special benefit to people who struggle with low energy levels. Its main benefit however is to ordinary people like you and me who know how unhealthy refined sugars can be.
Around half the sweetness of table sugar and safe for all to use, Trehalose can even be used in cooking as it does not interfere with natural flavours.
