» What is Cayenne?

Cayenne pepper has been traditionally used for thousands of years both in cooking and medicine. It is made from the dried pods of chilli peppers and is well known for its spicy taste and smell. Its strong heat comes from the chemical capsicum, which is also the active medicinal ingredient.

Cayenne Pepper originates from the Americas where it is particularly popular in cuisine. The plant was first cultivated in Peru as far back as four thousand years ago. The Hot and Bell chillies used to make Cayenne Pepper were first brought back to Europe by the explorer Diego Alvarez Chanca in the fifteenth century. It quickly spread across Europe into Asia where it also became popular in cooking and medicine.

The wide ranging medicinal properties of Cayenne are well known worldwide. It is known to work as a catalyst when used with other herbs, stimulating absorption and thus making them more effective. Cayenne Pepper also has many other beneficial effects.

Cayenne Pepper has a high vitamin content and is particularly rich in vitamin A. It also contains vitamin B6, vitamin C, vitamin E, riboflavin, potassium and manganese.

‘If you master only one herb in your life, master cayenne pepper. It is more powerful than any other.’ Dr. Schulze
