» What are Chia Seeds?

Chia is an annual herb and a member of the mint family. It is native to central and southern Mexico and Guatemala and is grown commercially for its seed.

Chia seeds are on their way to becoming the health food of choice among those in the know, being packed to the gunwales with nutritional goodness.

Chia seeds are extremely rich in essential fatty acids, including a compound found in many common vegetable oils called alpha-linolenic acid, an omega-3 fatty acid. They’re also home to a hearty source of other important nutritional components. They have a high protein content, five times more calcium than milk, seven times more vitamin c than oranges, three times more iron than spinach, twice the potassium content of a banana and a range of minerals. They are also super-high in dietary fibre.

Chia Seeds have essentially no flavour so although you can eat them straight out of the bag, the best way to use them is to combine them with other foods, either ground up and sprinkled liberally on cereal or yogurt or included in recipes. They are commonly added to bread, muffins, cereal and smoothies. They also make a great egg replacement. Just combine with water to form a gel, and add it to recipes that call for egg.

If you feel your diet is nutritionally lacking, you could do a lot worse than munch on a small handful of these tiny seeds.
