Apple Cider Vinegar and Acne

Apple Cider Vinegar For Acne - Can it clear it up?

Apple Cider Vinegar can be used as a very effective and non-toxic remedy for acne.

Acne typically appears as raised pimples on the face, back or arms, affecting at least 80% of teenagers and many adults. There are 2 different types, Non-Inflammatory and Inflammatory acne. Non-Inflammatory Acne typically appears as white heads and black heads, whereas Inflammatory Acne can cause more serious skin eruptions like pustules and cysts - Nice!.

Acne is caused by the skins' pores becoming blocked by sebum. The middle layer of skin (Dermis) is made up of hair folicles and subuceaus glands which produce this sebum. When the body over-produces hormones like androgen and progesterone (as it typically does during puberty), the glands produce too much sebum which blocks the pores.

This normally manifests itself as black heads and white heads but, if left untreated, they can become infected. When infection occurs, the immune system sends white blood cells to the site, leading to inflammation, making the condition look much worse.

The Apple Cider Vinegar Remedy for Acne

Apple Cider Vinegar will kill bacteria, reducing infection and therefore any inflammation. It will also absorb the excess oil (sebum) from the skin, getting to the cause of the problem, and balancing the skins pH in the process.

  1. Mix 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar with 3-4 parts water.
  2. Using clean cotton wool, apply the ACV solution to the affected and surrounding areas and leave for 10 minutes.
  3. Rinse the ACV off.
  4. Repeat 3 times daily.

For more serious cases of acne, this solution can be left on overnight before rinsing. Alternatively a slightly stronger solution can be used, perhaps 1 part Apple Cider Vinegar to 2 parts water. However never leave this stronger solution on the skin for more than 10 minutes.
