D-Limonene is a volatile oil derived from the peel of citrus fruits. It is commonly used in cosmetics and cleaning products due to its strong citrus orange smell. Although it has many other applications, its most important use is in the human body. Consumption of d-limonene stimulates the production of detoxifying enzymes and is quickly metabolized into limonene-1, 2-diol, perillic acid, dihydroperillic acid, and uroterpenol. D-Limonenes most common use is to combat heartburn. It does this by protecting the oesophagus from the backwards flow of gastric juices. Studies are being undertaken into d-limonene's application in the treatment of cancer.
