» What is Yerba Mate?
Yerba Mate is a traditional South American brew that’s been said to offer the 'strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea, and the euphoria of chocolate' all in one beverage. Grand claims indeed. Let's take a closer look.
Yerba Mate is made from the dried leaves of an evergreen holly, Ilex paraguariensis, a native plant of South America. It is most often consumed as a tea and has a well-founded reputation as a stimulant; stronger than tea but not quite a strong as coffee.
As a beverage it has something of an acquired taste so for those of us unwilling or unable to rustle up a brew, supplement manufacturers have done the job for us. Tablets and capsules with all the health benefits of Yerba Mate but without the hassle.
