Selenium

Selenium is an essential trace mineral used by the body to make antioxidant enzymes called selenoproteins. Without the presence of selenium, cells are unable to synthesize selenoproteins and deficiency can have many adverse effects on health. As well as their powerful antioxidant effects, selenoproteins have other important functions in the body. They're needed for the immune system to function correctly and also helps regulate the thyroid.

Plant foods are the main dietary source of selenium. The content of selenium contained in food is dependant on the amount of selenium present in soil where the plant was grown. Here in the UK our soil is considered to be selenium poor so for many people supplementation can be extremely useful. It should be possible to consume the correct amount of selenium with good nutrition however, many illnesses can cause the body’s ability to absorb and utilize selenium to be compromised. Many gastro-intestinal disorders can dramatically effect absorption. It is also common for cancer patients to encounter selenium deficiency as some treatments can cause severe gastro-intestinal disturbances.
