» What is Melatonin?

Melatonin, or 5-methoxy-N-acetyltryptamine, is a naturally occurring compound found in most living things. In humans, it is produced in the pineal gland at the base of the brain, and is a hormone made from the amino acid tryptophan. Its production is stimulated by darkness, when a signal is sent to the pineal gland to secrete melatonin. Light causes the production of melatonin to be suppressed. Melatonin regulates sleep cycles, and may play a role in the circadian rhythm (our body clock).
