Siberian Ginseng
What is Siberian Ginseng?
Siberian Ginseng is a herb that only grows in the cooler regions of the Northern hemisphere, mostly in South-East Russia and Northern China. Its roots and leaves are used in a variety of nutritional supplements.
How is Siberian Ginseng made?
The root of the Ginseng plant is dried and can be supplied either whole or sliced. Most Ginseng is sent for processing where the active constituent (eleutheroside) is extracted then converted into powder, the basis of most Siberian Ginseng products.
What is Siberian Ginseng used for?
Ginseng has long been renowned for its rejuvenating and strength-giving properties. It helps to increase physical endurance, mental alertness and can improve memory. It also has a strong anti-fatigue action, helping recovery from hard exercise. Other benefits include improved blood production and an increased ability to absorb and utilise oxygen efficiently. It has also been shown to help with the creation of anti-bodies (a vital part of the body’s defence system). It can also work as a de-toxifyer.
Siberian Ginseng and Cancer.
There have been several studies into Ginseng’s ability to fight cancer. A case-control study in Korea found that people who took Ginseng on a long term basis seemed to have a lower overall risk of cancer. The reason for this may be that Siberian Ginseng contains ‘saponins’ which are believed to slow down the growth of cancer cells and may even convert cancerous cells back into normal ones.
A Bit of History and Science.
Ginseng was first discovered around 5000 years ago in Manchuria, a mountainous region of China. It was probably first used as a food but quickly became known for its rejuvenating and strength-giving properties. Jump forward a few thousand years to the 1900’s and the demand for Ginseng finally outstripped the wild supply leading to the first crops for commercial use.
Ginseng is an adaptogenic herb. It contains many active chemical compounds, one of which is ‘eleuthero’ which works by reducing the reaction of the adrenal cortex in response to stress.
